COMMUNICATIONS LEARNING STANDARDS
The kindergarten student will be immersed in the development
of oral language skills and multicultural literature
appreciation with particular focus on African and African
American experiences. The student will recognize and
print letters of the alphabet, with particular emphasis
on basic phonetic principles. Identification of story
elements and communicating ideas through pictures and
writing will be emphasized as well. The necessity of
reading across the curriculum will be developed through
the use of number words and descriptive vocabulary in
math and science activities involving counting, sorting,
and observing the physical properties of people, places
and things. In history and social studies, the use of
time lines and the development of concepts of past and
present will provide the kindergarten student with opportunities
to use words that describe people, places, events and
time relationships.
MATH LEARNING
STANDARDS
The kindergarten standards place emphasis on counting;
combining, sorting, and comparing sets of objects; recognizing
and describing simple patterns and recognizing shapes
and sizes of figures and objects using a variety of
manipulatives (sizes, shapes and textures).
Mathematics has its own language, and the acquisition
of specialized vocabulary and language patterns is crucial
to a student's understanding and appreciation
of the subject. Students will be encouraged to use correctly
the concepts, skills, symbols, and vocabulary identified
in the following set of standards.
Problem solving has been integrated throughout the
six content strands. The development of problem-solving
skills is a major goal of the mathematics program at
every grade level. Instruction in the process of problem
solving is integrated early and continuously into each
student's mathematics education. Students will
be helped to develop a wide range of skills and strategies
for solving a variety of problem types.
The use of appropriate technologies such as computers
and calculators begins early but they will not be regarded
as a substitute for a student's understanding of quantitative concepts and relationships or for proficiency
in basic computations.
HISTORY & SOCIAL
STUDIES LEARNING STANDARDS
The standards for kindergarten students include a review
of the members of their families and an introduction
to the lives of interesting historical figures and their
families. During the course of their first year in school,
students should learn basic concepts involving historical
time sequence, geographic direction, and economic choices.
They should use maps and globes to identify some of
the places and geographic features that are discussed
in rich stories of history. Initial citizenship education
should include the importance of following rules and
respecting the rights of other people. Students should
also have opportunities to learn about national symbols.
They should learn how individuals acquire the economic
goods and services they need and want. They should learn
the concepts of self-control, justice, courage, heroism
and leadership.
SCIENCE LEARNING STANDARDS
The kindergarten standards stress the use of basic
science skills to explore common materials, objects,
and living things. Emphasis is placed on using the senses
to gather information. Students are expected to develop
skills in posing simple questions, measuring, sorting,
classifying, and communicating information about the
natural world. The science skills are an important focus
as students learn about life processes and properties
of familiar materials such as magnets and water. Through
phenomena including shadows, patterns of weather, and
plant growth, students are introduced to the concept
of change. The significance of natural resources and
conservation is introduced in the kindergarten standards.
