Why School-to-Careers
SunRise Academy opts to use “School to Careers” rather than “School to Work”. It seems to us a more accurate description of our broader vision since we are not preparing our students to simply find a job that they may be “stuck” in for the rest of their adult lives due to lack of training. We are encouraging our students who are now so poorly served by our educational process to take advantage of this opportunity in preparation for college, trade schools, or to be able to retrain easily should a shift in the labor market occur or an opportunity for promotion presents itself. STC involves helping students to understand the connection between success in school and success in their careers.
According to our research, focused and committed personnel in School-to-Work programs across the country have found that:
- The number of skilled jobs is increasing rapidly as the number of unskilled jobs is declining.
- Based on documented statistics, the career opportunities for special needs students are still very bleak.
- Students become more motivated when academic subjects become integrated and linked to the world outside the school.
- The School-to-Work program will increase the odds of our students having success in the work place.
SunRise Academy serves youth that have been traditionally left uninspired and unprepared by school. We believe that a strong focused School-to-Careers program can best serve these students by creating an educational experience for them that is rigorous, engaging and rewarding. The STC program at the Academy consists of school-based learning, work-based learning and connecting activities.
